Chronic Cocktails: The Elyon Eggnug

The holiday season: a time of joy, reflection, giving thanks, spending time with loved ones and finding the perfect gifts for them. But our favorite part of the holiday season? The food. It’s a time when indulging in sweet treats and sugary cookies is encouraged rather than frowned upon. It’s the most wonderful time of the year for stoners.

Buzzing with Holiday Spirit

While Christmas ham fills our plates and sugar plums satisfy our sweet tooth, what fills our cups may be a contentious question come holiday time. Eggnog is a drink that brings out a lot of strong opinions. Most people either love it or hate it. However you feel, there is no denying that this frothy, sweet and spicy drink is a holiday tradition. Once a drink relegated to the cups of the wealthy, it is now found in grocery aisles and holiday tables worldwide. It also comes in numerous versions. Soy eggnog? Sure. Lowfat? Seems to go against the spirit of the season, but why not? With alcohol? Yes, please.

The store bought versions can be delicious, but there is nothing like homemade eggnog. Perhaps we should rephrase that. There is nothing like homemade eggnug. The addition of cannabis to this holiday treat is just what Santa ordered. It’s the perfect after dinner night cap while snuggling by the fire or a nice lubricant to ease tensions at the holiday office party. Just make sure your coworkers know you spiked the punch with more than just alcohol.

So how do you add a little nug to your nog? The answer is canna honey. This natural sweetener is a great alternative to sugar and is the perfect method of infusion for this drink. Similar to cannabutter, it’s very simple to make canna honey. First decarb your cannabis. We recommend 7 grams but you seasoned stoners can certainly double it. Once decarbed, put the cannabis in a crockpot and turn the setting to high. Add a cup of water and bring it to a simmer. Finally, add two cups of honey. Let sit for three to five hours and then strain through a cheesecloth. It’s as simple as one, two, bee.

Dreaming of a White Christmas

Everyone dreams of a white Christmas, but here in Sonoma County we rarely think of snow. So what does a white Christmas mean to us? It’s a layer of frosty, little white trichomes, dusting a nice dense nug. White Runtz is full of them. That’s only partially the reason why we chose it for our eggnug, though. First you have flavor. White Runtz is known for its sweet taste. Eggnog can get rich quick, but with its sweet and sour flavor and underlying hints of earthy citrus, White Runtz is the perfect ingredient to balance out the cloying milkiness. Next comes feelings. This perfectly balanced hybrid (50% indica, 50% sativa) offers up a good mix of relaxation and euphoria. It’s a great body high but won’t cloud your mind too much, leaving you at perfect ease to talk to your boss or grandma at the next Christmas party.

The Elyon Eggnug

Ingredients*:

  • 3 egg yolks
  • 4-6 tablespoons White Runtz canna honey (warmed)
  • 1 cup half and half
  • ½ cup cream
  • 3-4 oz bourbon
  • ½ tsp grated nutmeg
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 3 egg whites
  • ½ tbsp sugar

Directions:

  1. Separate the eggs. Set the whites aside for later use. Add the yolks to the bowl of an electric mixer and beat on high for 3-5 minutes.
  2. Mix in the canna honey. Warmed honey will be easier to pour in and will integrate faster. Mix until completely dissolved.
  3. Add the half and half, cream, bourbon, nutmeg and cinnamon. Remove from mixer and set aside.
  4. Quickly rinse the bowl so you can add the egg whites. Beat until soft peaks form.
  5. Add the sugar and beat until you have stiff peaks. Whisk the egg white mixture into the yolk mixture and serve!
  6. *This recipe makes 2-3 glasses but is easily doubled for more holiday cheer.
Happy Holidaze

Serving the eggnug fresh is a frothy delight but you can make it the night before and let all the flavors come together overnight in the fridge. You can also modify the recipe according to your tastes. Add more or less canna honey depending on your tolerance level for cannabis and sweetness. Like a thicker eggnog; add more cream and less half and half. Want a boozier version? Add more bourbon (or rum, brandy, sherry, etc…). The world is your eggnug. Drink it up and enjoy the holidaze.
