Chronic Cocktails: Hot (Canna)Buttered Rum

It’s fall and it’s cold outside. While snuggling by the fire or cuddling under a mountain of blankets both sound like nice ways to warm up, may we suggest another option: hot cocktails. They warm you inside and out. And in this version, you get high as well!

Getting Toasty

When most people think of fall beverages, their minds most often leap to pumpkin spice lattes. PSLs are great but let us present another spicy fall drink: the HBR, or hot buttered rum. This classic cocktail dates back to America’s colonial days when rum was considered medicinal. While rum may no longer be doctor approved, cannabis is! There’s nothing more classic in cannabis than weed butter so it’s the perfect infusion for this traditional drink.

Making cannabutter is an easy, but long process. You can make it on the stovetop or in a crockpot. We followed Mennlay Golokeh Aggrey’s recipe because she literally wrote the book on it. First, you need to decarb your cannabis. Mennlay’s recipe calls for half an ounce of weed, which roughly equates to 30 mg of THC per tablespoon of butter. That may be good for you heavy hitters but because this cocktail recipe calls for a full tablespoon of butter in each drink, we recommend halving the weed and only using a quarter of an ounce. Once you’ve decided your dosage and decarbed it, mix your cannabis with water and butter in a saucepan. Cover and let it simmer for four hours. Easy peasy. One thing you do want to be diligent about is temperature control. Don’t let it get too hot, otherwise the weed will start imparting bitter flavors. Keep a thermometer on hand and make sure it doesn’t get above 180 degrees.

The Rhino in the Room

This cocktail feels like a warm hug so you want a strain that will feel similar. Enter the Rhino in the room, specifically the White Rhino. This strain is high in caryophyllene, a terpene also found in black pepper and cinnamon. Caryophyllene gives the strain a spicy, musky aroma that matches flavors with the drink as well as feelings. White Rhino is a heavy hitting strain that will leave you euphoric but lazy–perfect for sipping your cocktail fireside.

Butter Me Up

A few tips to enhance your HBR sipping experience: Don’t worry if you don’t have those exact spices on hand. You can substitute in cloves or use a combination of what you have on hand in your spice cabinet. Don’t use boiling water, it can make the spices and the cannabutter too bitter. Treat it like tea, use hot water but not boiling. Make sure your cannabutter is at room temperature before muddling it with the spices. Cold butter won’t integrate with the drink as well and will create an oily topcoat. Relax, sit back and let the White Rhino take you away with every warming sip.
